Office of Civic Engagement
The Office of Civic Engagement has selected 10 University of Chicago students to serve as the first members of its newly formed Student Advisory Committee—providing a diverse group of student voices to help shape the University’s civic engagement efforts.
The inaugural committee includes graduate and undergraduate students from across the University. The students were selected during the Fall 2013 quarter after the Office of Civic Engagement solicited applications through the 2012-2013 Student Government.
“Many UChicago students are deeply involved with our surrounding communities and have great ideas about the University’s role in the community,” said Derek R.B. Douglas, Vice President for Civic Engagement at the University. “The Student Advisory Committee will provide an important link between student efforts and the University’s civic engagement initiatives.”
The group will meet several times throughout the year with representatives from the Office of Civic Engagement and will provide another opportunity for the University to bring a student perspective to civic engagement priorities, events, and initiatives by facilitating communication with other students across campus; advising the Vice President for Civic Engagement on student concerns as it relates to the University’s interactions with the local community, city and the region; and strengthening the connection between the Office of Civic Engagement and the student-led community initiatives across campus.
Members of the 2013-2014 Student Advisory Committee for the Office of Civic Engagement are:
- Yusef Al-Jarani, 3rd year
- Ava Benezra, 3rd year
- Eric Chien, 2nd year
- Andrew Holzman, 2nd year
