More than 350 University of Chicago students, alumni, and family and community members welcomed in the year of the snake on Saturday, Feb. 9, during an annual celebration of the Chinese New Year at International House at the University of Chicago.
“The Chinese Students and Scholars Association worked hard to provide Chinese students and scholars in Chicago a opportunity to get together and experience the tradition of the Chinese New Year, said Jing Zhou, the president of CSSA. “This was also an opportunity to let Americans to know more about China.”
This year’s Chinese New Year Gala was organized by CSSA, a Registered Student Organization, and the International House Global Voices Performing Arts Series. According to Mary Beth DeStefano, Associate Director of the Office of Programs and External Relations at I-House, Chinese New Year celebrations have taken place at International House of Chicago throughout its eighty year history.
“The Chinese New Year celebration at International House is very popular and attracts a diverse group of people, including students and their families and members of our alumni community, DeStefano said. “We’re delighted that International House can provide opportunities for campus and community cross-cultural engagement and the celebration of cultural heritage and traditions.”
This year’s event featured performances of traditional Chinese dance, singing by UChicago students, musical performances by a selection of Hyde Park music students, and a skit by the CSSA’s drama club. Attendees also made dumplings and enjoyed a broad selection of traditional Chinese food.
Many activities were conducted in Mandarin, but English-language translation was provided.
The Chinese New Year, which began on February 10, is celebrated by millions of people around the world.
