A Chuck Todd Moderated Student Debate: Which Presidential Candidate is Best for Gen Z?

The presidents of the UChicago campus, Republicans and Democrats, will face off over domestic and foreign policy in a rare Counterpoint event moderated by IOP Pritzker Fellow and NBC journalist Chuck Todd. Kate Davis, a fourth-year pre-law major from New York City, will argue for Vice President Kamala Harris. Davis serves as Co-President of the University of Chicago Democrats. Arguing for former President Donald Trump is Christopher Phillips, a fourth-year undergraduate from Pomona, CA, studying Economics and Political Science. Phillips is the publisher and editor-in-chief of The Thinker and president of the College Republicans.

Legal Umbrellas: Preparing for Possible Election Storms

How are state lawmakers, election officials, digital information experts and law enforcement preparing for election day and beyond? In this hybrid event, we will hear about efforts afoot to contest votes and spread misinformation on social media, how states are preparing for possible disruptions of the ratification process and whether officials expect any replicas of the Jan 6 uprising at the state level. Featuring Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Maricopa County, Arizona Recorder Stephen Richer, CEO of Check My Ads Claire Atkin, Sheriff Peter Koutoujian (MA) and New York Times reporter Jim Rutenberg, who has been a dedicated chronicler of these efforts for the last decade.

Hear from lawyer Jonathan Mitchell, currently Principal of Mitchell Law PLLC. Mitchell will be in conversation with Professor Tom Ginsburg, Faculty Director of the Chicago Forum.

Mitchell received his law degree with high honors from the University of Chicago Law School, where he was an articles editor of The University of Chicago Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif. Mitchell has served as Visiting Researcher at Georgetown University Law Center, Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago Law School, Assistant Professor of Law at George Mason University, Searle Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Texas School of Law, and Visiting Professor of Law at Stanford Law School. He has served as the Solicitor General of Texas and represented former President Trump at the Supreme Court in the case of Trump v. Anderson.

Mitchell will share his experiences with free speech and how it can influence institutions in shaping one's trajectory as a scholar or professor.
