In a presentation from 6-7 p.m. on Monday, January 28, at International House, Alex Lickerman, MD, will discuss whether resilience is something that individuals can learn.
In his book, "The Undefeated Mind: On the Science of Constructing an Indestructible Self," Lickerman draws on the tenets of Buddhism and new scientific research to argue that resilience isn't something with which only a fortunate few of us have been born, but rather something we can all take action to develop. Offering a set of guidelines for making all problems solvable, he details nine principles that we can use to increase our ability to withstand adversity and cultivate inner strength.
Alex Lickerman, MD, is a physician, former assistant professor of medicine and director of primary care, current assistant vice-president for Student Health and Counseling Services at the University of Chicago and practicing Buddhist. He was recently selected by the Consumer Research Council of America as one of America's top physicians and writes a blog on the website of "Psychology Today."
Presented by the International House Global Voices Lecture Series and Student Health and Counseling Services at the University of Chicago. This event is free and open to the public.
