Subject: Reminder on policies and laws concerning marijuana

As you prepare for the start of the Winter quarter, I write to you with important reminders about marijuana use on campus. As you may know, a new Illinois state law went into effect on January 1, 2020, that legalizes recreational use of marijuana by adults who are 21 and older in their private residences, with certain important restrictions. The new law continues to prohibit marijuana use in public places, streets, sidewalks, and other places where it is illegal under the Smoke Free Illinois Act, including student residence halls. In addition, under applicable laws and University policy, the use or possession of marijuana in any form on University of Chicago owned and operated property and facilities, including all buildings, pathways and quadrangles, remains prohibited.
The University is subject to federal laws that classify marijuana as a Schedule I controlled substance and make its possession, use and distribution on campus property illegal. As noted in the Student Manual, violation of these or other laws relating to drugs and alcohol may result in probation, fines, imprisonment, and a permanent criminal record. Additionally, a violation may result in University disciplinary action.
For more detailed information about the University’s drug and alcohol policies, federal and state statutes related to illicit drug trafficking and possession, and state statutes regarding marijuana use and alcohol use by minors, please consult the Student Manual and the University’s Annual Security and Fire Safety Report.
