Guidance for Interactions with Federal Immigration Authorities

October 17, 2025

Dear Members of the University Community,

There is an increase in federal law enforcement activity in the Chicago region, including in Hyde Park. We write to provide you with information in the event you encounter immigration authorities. The Office of International Affairs regularly communicates with the University’s international community and provides guidance. You can find their most recent message to students about encounters with law enforcement on their website.

Earlier this week, an international student was stopped and briefly detained on a street in Hyde Park in what appears to be a federal immigration enforcement action. The student was carrying immigration documentation and provided it when asked, after which they were released. The student also called UCPD, and UChicago offices have been in touch to provide support.

The University also recommends the following to the broader University community:

  • If you have documentation, such as a government-issued identification card or immigration documentation, that shows you are lawfully present in the United States, consider carrying it with you when possible. International students and employees should continue to follow the most recent guidance from OIA.

  • If an interaction with federal authorities occurs, remain calm and courteous. Notify UCPD when you are able. UCPD officers are trained to provide support in many different situations and can help connect you to various University resources. UCPD is the primary law enforcement agency on UChicago’s campus and acts in a supporting role in its extended patrol area.

While every situation is different, these actions can help members of the campus community to be prepared. An updated federal law enforcement FAQ is available on the Department of Safety & Security website, which will continue to be updated as more information become available.

Remember that Deans-on-Call are always available to support students; employees can access the Staff and Faculty Assistance Program.

Sincerely,
