On Thursday, October 17, Annise Parker, the first openly gay person elected as mayor of a major US city, will talk about her experiences as part of a RISE: Reflect. Intervene. Speak. Engage. keynote lecture.
Parker is now in her second term as mayor. In 2010, TIME magazine included her as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. The keynote will focus on Parker’s experiences as the mayor the fourth largest US city, discussing diversity, LGBTQ, and civil rights issues and building allyships across multiple communities.
This is the second RISE keynote lecture since Campus and Student Life launched the diversity initiative in the spring. RISE represents our shared commitment to the values of respect and free expression as a University community. Through RISE, Campus and Student Life aims to encourage University community members to reflect on and challenge assumptions about the role of class, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, nationality, disability, and other aspects of identity.
The keynote will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will take place at the Cloister Club at Ida Noyes Hall, 1212 East 59th Street. The event is free and open to the public.
