Karlene Burrell-McRae hired as Director of OMSA, Assoc. Dean of Students

Dr. Karlene Burrell-McRae, former Assistant Dean and Director of the Black Cultural Center at Swarthmore College, has been appointed as the next Associate Dean of Students and Director of the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs at the University of Chicago. She will begin her tenure on August 4, 2014.

Burrell-McRae has served as the Assistant Dean of College and Director of Black Cultural Center at Swarthmore College since 2011. In this role, she was responsible for academic and personal advising, was part of the emergency on call system, and assisted in the implementation of the student disciplinary system for all students. She also provided advising, advocacy and support for students and student groups through the Black Cultural Center. Prior to Swarthmore, Burrell-McRae spent 18 years at the University of Pennsylvania, where she held a number of positions with increasing responsibility within the Division of University Life, including as the Director of the Makuu Black Cultural Center and the Director of the Greenfield Intercultural Center. Burrell-McRae holds a Doctorate in Education, Master of Social Work and Master of Science in Education from the University of Pennsylvania, and a B.A. in Anthropology from Colby College.
