Michele Rasmussen and Bridget Collier: Sexual Misconduct Awareness and Prevention Training Update

September 24, 2018

To: All students
From: Michele Rasmussen, Dean of Students in the University and Bridget Collier, Associate Provost & Title IX Coordinator for the University
Subject: Sexual Misconduct Awareness and Prevention Training Update
Date: Monday, September 24, 2018

As Provost Diermeier mentioned in his September 20, 2018, message, annual sexual misconduct awareness and prevention training is mandatory every year for all students, faculty, other academic appointees, staff, and postdoctoral researchers. All graduate students, professional students, and second- through fourth-year students in the College are required to complete an online training program. First-year students in the College receive a combination of online training prior to O-Week and during the Autumn Quarter, and in-person training during O-Week.

On or around October 1, 2018, all students that are required to complete the online course will receive an email from the online training provider, EverFi, and titleix@uchicago.edu that contains detailed instructions, the deadline for completion, and a link to the course. The program allows you to save your progress and return at a later time, but the full course must be completed in its entirety by the deadline contained in the email. Students who do not complete the training by the deadline will not be permitted to register for the Winter Quarter.

As the Provost mentioned in his email, Shea Wolfe serves as the Director for the Office for Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Support, Deputy Title IX Coordinator for Students & Associate Dean of Students in the University. We encourage you to reach out to Shea to ask her any questions about the University’s policies, procedures, and resources pertaining to sexual misconduct, or to schedule an appointment to meet with her. Shea will be holding open office hours every Tuesday from 11 am – 2 pm. You are welcome to stop by at any time during these office hours.

Megan Heckel, Associate Director, will be assisting with campus-wide training, student outreach with student leaders and advisory boards, and support/resources. Megan comes to us from DePaul University where she served for five years in Residential Education managing crisis response, bystander intervention programs, and student support. Vickie Sides, Associate Director for Prevention Initiatives and Programming, will be responsible for all campus-wide prevention initiatives, awareness months, bystander intervention programs, and will continue to manage the RSVP Programming Center, a hub of student-run workshops on sexual and relationship violence and prevention. Prior to UChicago, Vickie worked at the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago and the Chicago Rape Crisis Hotline.

Shea and her team are located at 5525 S. Ellis Ave., and she can be reached at 773.702.0438 or swolfe1@uchicago.edu.

We encourage you to review the University’s one-page resource guide for students and visit the UMatter website or the Provost’s website for additional information regarding the University’s response to sexual misconduct and resources (including confidential resources) available to our community.

We look forward to receiving your feedback on the course and to continuing to work with our students to enhance, develop, and implement training programs pertaining to sexual misconduct prevention.

Sincerely,

Michele Rasmussen, Dean of Students in the University

Bridget Collier, Associate Provost & Title IX Coordinator for the University
