Reflections on the Laquan McDonald Shooting and Van Dyke Verdict

October 5, 2018

In the wake of the verdict of the Jason Van Dyke murder trial, Campus and Student Life will host a reflection event from 6:30–8:30 p.m. on Friday, October 5, at the Center for Identity + Inclusion so that students may join a facilitated discussion with University staff members or to simply have quiet reflection time. A Student Counseling Service (SCS) staff member will be on hand at this event. Students may also seek one-on-one time with staff members from Spiritual Life.

As a reminder, there are a variety of resources that students may turn to for support. SCS holds three Let’s Talk sessions per week, where students have access to free, informal, and confidential consultations with therapists. More details are available on the Wellness website.

Other resources include:

While we hope that you will take advantage of the programming and support on campus, we understand that some students may participate in protests in the city. We encourage you to seek guidance from staff members on how to safely participate in these activities.

We would also encourage you to install the UChicago Safe app on your phones. One of the features this app includes is Friend Walk, allowing users to share their location (on or off campus) so that a friend can monitor their walk to a safe destination.
