We write to share difficult news for the University community and our neighbors. The University has learned that a student in the College was shot and injured yesterday evening by what appears to be a stray bullet while sitting in an off-campus Chicago Transit Authority elevated train near 51st Street and King Drive. The student is being treated at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

We are greatly saddened by this news and our thoughts are with the student and the student’s family.

Given the location, the Chicago Police Department is investigating the shooting. If you have any information related to this incident or if you witness any suspicious activity, please report it immediately to the Chicago Police Department (911) or the University of Chicago Police Department – 773.702.8181. More safety and security information is available at safety-security.uchicago.edu.

The University will offer counselors and other support for members of our community affected by this incident. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
