  • Students seeking urgent medical care can call the Nurse Line at 773.702.4156, available 24/7. An experienced registered nurse can answer health care questions, explain potential care options, and, if necessary, help you find the nearest place to receive a diagnosis and treatment.
  • Students seeking urgent mental health care can call 773.702.9800 or walk in to the Student Counseling Service office at 5555 South Woodlawn Avenue during business hours. After business hours, call 773.702.3625 to speak with a therapist-on-call.

Student Health and Counseling Services

At the University of Chicago, students have access to coordinated and comprehensive services targeted at building and maintaining overall well-being. These services are available through Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS), which is comprised of the Student Health Service (SHS), Student Counseling Service (SCS), Health Promotion and Wellness (HPW), and Student Insurance.

Medical Services

SHCS provides students with primary, routine health care, such as physical examinations, as well as acute care for a wide range of complaints. Medical services include:

  • Allergy Injections

  • Eating concerns support and assessment

  • Immunizations
  • Laboratory testing
  • Physical therapy
  • Prescription refills
  • Primary and acute care

Mental Health Services

SHCS is committed to promoting the mental health and well-being of UChicago undergraduate and graduate students by providing accessible, high-quality, culturally sensitive mental health services. Mental Health services include:

  • Academic Skills Assessment Program
  • Eating concerns support and assessment
  • Let’s Talk (drop-in therapy sessions)
  • Prescription refills
  • Psychiatric consultation
  • Referrals to other medical or mental health specialists
  • Substance use evaluations
  • Therapy (individual and couples)

Student Insurance

All students registered in an insurance-required program are enrolled in the University Student Health Insurance Plan (U-SHIP), administered by UnitedHealthcare StudentResources, unless they waive coverage by providing proof of alternate comparable coverage. If you enrolled in U-SHIP, on-campus U-SHIP coordinators, available at uchicagoadvocates@uhcsr.com or 773.834.4543 (option 2) are able to answer questions about covered health benefits and other topics related to U-SHIP.
