About the Sexual Assault Dean-on-Call Program
The Sexual Assault Dean-on-Call (SADoC) is a 24/7 University program staffed by administrators who are specifically trained in trauma-informed 40+ Hour Sexual Assault Crisis Intervention. The Sexual Assault Dean-on-Call is available to answer any general or personal questions related to sexual assault. The Sexual Assault Dean-on-Call ensures that the full breadth of University resources is available to assist the student through the crisis, explains procedures at the police station or the emergency room, gives general information about the criminal justice system and University disciplinary procedures, and provides referrals for counseling and other services, such as legal advocacy. The Sexual Assault Dean-on-Call will remain in contact with the student as long as the student wishes.
The Sexual Assault Dean-on-Call may speak with a student in confidence, and report only to the University that an incident occurred without revealing any personally identifying information. Personally identifying information will only be shared after obtaining the reporting student’s consent.
Note: due to the nature of the work Sexual Assault Deans-on-Call are asked to preform, any history of workplace misconduct makes an applicant ineligible for this position.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Serves as the primary first responder from Campus and Student Life to incidents of sexual or relationship violence involving University students.
- Assists (either in person or by phone) in providing referrals, support and information to students and other community members during and after emergency situations, high-profile or other significant events, and critical incidents involving students with regard to gender based violence.
- Intervenes in crises and effectively communicates institutional policies and resources.
- Liaises with other areas of the University (when appropriate) including but not limited to: UChicago HELP, UChicago CARES, Department of Safety and Security, and Student Wellnes.
- Participates in on-going professional development to remain current in responsibilities, policies, and procedures for responding to gender based violence incidents in the US and abroad.
- Works at least two weekly rotations throughout each quarter.
- Manages confidential and sensitive information judiciously and with integrity, consistent with FERPA and University policies.
- Provides daily incident reports, via Maxient, summarizing Dean-on-Call activities.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Ability to listen carefully to all sides of a situation.
- Ability to consider different points of view.
- Excellent judgment.
- Ability to be empathetic.
- Willingness to dedicate time and effort to outcomes that resolve the situation and may set precedent.
- Ability to handle varying and unpredictable workload (e.g. Phone calls about student emergencies may come at any time of the day or night, any day of the year and require immediate attention; Sexual Assault Deans-on-Call may be required to accompany student victims at court appearances.)
- Has completed the mandatory 40 hour Sexual Assault Crisis Intervention training within the last 5 years, or will complete the training upon being offered the position.
- Available trainings for this recruitment cycle are as follows:
- Has never received corrective action for unprofessional or inappropriate behavior or other misconduct in the workplace.
- Has worked for the University of Chicago for at least one year prior to application.
Physical Demands
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to be on-call for a one-week period (168 consecutive hours) in addition to primary University position
- Ability to travel to various on and off-campus locations any day of the week and any time of the day or night (transportation provided).
- Ability to respond to emergency situations immediately or as soon as possible.
